Crooked Street

Anyone who knew Daddy will remember this song.

Crooked Street

Some years ago my residence was done on crooked street
Old carnality was the Cop that occupied my street
The devil was the land lord and very high the rent
T’was due that very morning and I didn’t have a cent
I thought I'd have to go to jail just to pay the penalty
Then a knock came at my door and a voice said unto me
I see you're in a terrible fix I'll tell you what I'll do
I'll move you down from Crooked Street to Glory Avenue
A crooked woman once resided down on Crooked Street.
The devil had her doubled up from her nose down to her feet.
Her sympathizers told her death would only bring relief
But she’s about to move away  to Glory Avenue
One day Jesus came along and drove the devil out
The woman’s crooked backed was straighten up and she began to shout.
It was there he found a famous crook up in a sycamore tree
Jesus said please come down I must abide with thee

He left his crooked works behind and made restitution too
And then he moved from crooked street to Glory Avenue

 Chorus
I’m glad I moved from crooked street
To Glory Avenue
The sun is always shinning here
And Monday’s never blue
No mortgage on my property
No tax will ever come due
I’m glad I moved from crooked street
To Glory Avenue.

  1. I was thinking about my Granny and found this old song in my Mom's kitchen drawer. She said it was her Mom's. It was not by chance that I came upon that old piece of paper.

  3. Correction to lyrics: Third line down reads, "the devil was the landlord and very high the rent"

  4. I’ve search for this song for years. My grandmother taught us this song when I was a child. We would go to her house and sit on the front porch in her old glider swing and sing to the neighborhood. I’m glad I finally found the words. My pastor read the scriptures on this story and it brought it to my mind. Thank you fir sharing it online.

  6. He does it best I've ever heard. Brother Charles never needed music behind him either. Would you post the way he sings the lyrics?
